I had to learn who I am. Now I dedicate every day to helping the world learn who they are, in spite of the systems that may be designed to say otherwise.
For 45 years — since I first coached youth sports in 1978 — I have stood at the intersection of athletics and intellect, watching brilliance go unrecognized because it arrived in a body that moved differently, learned differently, and cared about different things. I am Dr. Dwayne B. Thomas, Founder and Chief Learning Strategist of SportsGenius™. And this is not a product. This is my life's work.
My work spans international boardrooms and inner-city classrooms, Olympic stages and underserved school districts. As International Director at Special Olympics International across 190+ countries, as Florida Department of Education architect of curriculum reaching 2.8 million students, as a university professor since 1995, and as a former Division I walk-on and professional football player — every experience has confirmed one inescapable truth: the genius was always in the room. The system just refused to see it.
"The Exclusion Was Never an Accident."
George Land and Beth Jarman's landmark longitudinal study revealed that 98% of children demonstrate genius-level divergent thinking at age five. By age ten, that number drops to 30%. By fifteen, 12%. By adulthood, a staggering 2% (Land & Jarman, 1993). Daniel Pink, drawing on this research, identified a systemic culprit: an education model designed to narrow, standardize, and eliminate — not cultivate — the full range of human intelligence (Pink, 2005).
Howard Gardner identified bodily-kinesthetic intelligence as one of eight distinct intelligences in 1983 — a finding with profound implications for how schools should teach and assess (Gardner, 2011). Forty years later, most educational systems have not caught up. Research on student engagement confirms the cost: declining motivation, rising disconnection, and systemic underperformance among students whose strengths fall outside the narrow band of verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence (Fredricks et al., 2004).
The exclusion of kinesthetic intelligence and sports interest from mainstream academic research was not an oversight. It was a deliberate hierarchy — a decision about whose genius counted, whose curiosity deserved a curriculum, and whose passion warranted academic legitimacy. I built SportsGenius™ to correct that.
